5 predictions for 2010 - Anush Mirbegian
1. Bold Colour has been a heavily painted trend for the past few seasons. Artists Kristen Baker and Walead Beshty fully take on and over colour combinations in their extremely creative and abstract landscape paintings and photographs and could prove to be an inspirations and influence designers to create a colour combustion with newer eye popping combinations.
2. A Dino Risi film retrospective at MOMA in NYC and the premier of NINE on Christmas day foreshadow a renewed interest in Old School Italian Cinema. Expect to see the revival of 1950s and 60s Italian style.
3. Resort 2010 collections had a tropical getaway theme running though them. Seen at Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Lanvin are vivid floral prints in sun soaked colours and heavy sparkling embellishments in palm leaf and parrot motifs. The tropical beachscape through the lushness of Paul Gauguin’s Noa Noa is sure to be an influence in warmer months.
4. We saw this trend slowly emerge a couple seasons ago in Milan with the barely concealing lace from Prada and Dolce and Gabbana. Religious inspirations are sure to be back with pious silhouettes, gilded jewels, intricate golden threading and heavily saturated primary colours. ‘The Origins of El Greco’ exhibit at the Onassis Cultural Center, NYC offers the ideal reference point with meticulous ancient religious painting.
5. We have been seeing dark glimmers of nature inspired mystics in atmospheric music from artists like School of Seven Bells and Brighton based Bat for Lashes, whose sounds mirror their glittering on stage styles. Erin Wasson x RVCA NY Spring 2010 showed wears for a girl on a road trip through the desert. Look forward to more inspirations from desert landscapes and forest fantasies.
