Contemporary Chaos
Now showing at the beautiful riverside Penrith Regional Gallery until November, Disorder Disorder (Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art) thrills with its pop brights and classy disarray, showcasing 20 artists from around the world. The exhibition illuminates the worlds of skateboarding, graffiti, gaming, surfing, tattooing, music and other areas of maverick culture. Legendary graffiti artist Stephen Powers had been in St Mary's residence for the week preceeding the opening, working with local businesses for a planned building billboard, the likes of which he is now famous for in his United States homeland. He gave a lecture on his work to the captivated crowd (including a busload of cool Monster Children Gallery people), after which there was a mass exodus to the studio where he had been painting, then onto the Penrith Gallery for the official opening - a genuine art happening!
It's well worth a drive out to Penrith from busy downtown Sydney - don't forget to purchase the official exhibition catalogue, a snip at $20, designed by hot-to-trot designer Jonathan Zawada.
Scout hearts art.
