Gilbert & George at Art Gallery of NSW
Reluctant art superstars make a special valentines.
Gilbert and George, in a rare visit to Australia, revisited Sydney's Art Gallery of NSW for a very special Valentines Day. Starting the day with an introduction before a screening of their own BBC documentary, the iconic duo, resplendent in matching beige suits, went on to sign Valentines Day cards for the queuing hundreds that were lucky enough to purchase the limited range of cards.
Simultaneously, thousands of people were patiently filling up the Gallery's foyer, in what felt like a genuine art happening. Quite fitting for the reluctant art superstars who last visited the same gallery in 1973 for the infamous "Singing Sculpture" performance piece.
To rapturous applause the pair settled on a raised platform for a filmed Q&A. The giddy eccentrics, who seem to live and breathe as one, shared anecdotes about their daily monotonous life in East London, and also talked freely of their views on religion while seeming to get a kick out of using filthy language infront of the packed crowd.
Startling and provocative just like their magnificent artworks.
