Hey Sweet thing!
Here’s how to indulge your sweet tooth without breaking the diet: head to Tokyo and indulge in the sugary creations of Tadaaki Wakamatsu for his accessory brand Q-pot. A former model, he switched to accessories in 1999 to help his sick father, who worked with leather. In 2002 he launched his own line, inspired, he says, by watching the look of delight on his daughter’s face, when she smeared whipped cream across her face while eating cake. From humble beginnings with a small street stall, Q-Pot is now a sensation, with a mega-store on Tokyo’s exclusive Omotesando Street and collaborations with Blythe Dolls, Disney and Docomo cell phones. Last March, Wakamatsu was invited to decorate the Paris Bourse as a giant cake, for the annual Tranoi fashion trade fair. Last December, his unnervingly realistic “melty chocolate” cellphones for Docomo, had fans queuing overnight. Move over iPad! Wakamatsu believes his success comes from his ability to be playful and make people smile. Now, a new breed of Tokyo fashion girls, known as “Mori Girls” or Forest Girls, have made Q-Pot a must-have. Moving on from the elaborate Lolita and Alice in Wonderland looks of a few years ago, Mori Girls are sweet and dreamy in a Sofia Coppola – Virgin Suicides way, favouring organic cottons, vintage lace, quirky prints and soft, gelato colours.
