London Department Store Windows

London’s two big department stores, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges have unveiled their spring window concepts with two completely different creative approaches.

Selfridges capture the glamorous grime of iconic London street market culture. Garish flouro signage, plastic fittings, gaudy colours and ‘two fer a pand’ price tags off-set the season’s more eye-popping collections in primary brights and pattern clashes. The designer knock-off is alluded to whilst high-end luxury is stacked side by side with cans of cheap soda and plastique toys. Tacky has never looked so tasteful.

At the other end of the scale, Harvey Nichols takes a more serene approach - presenting a scrap metal shipwreck where seaweed, coral and other oceanic flotsam and jetsam fashioned from tarnished metal sheets looking mechanically organic. Nautical elements are cleverly incorporated into details like rope twine that transforms into salty blonde mannequin locks. As for the fashion, think frothy ‘sea-foam’ style lace, pure whites and oceanic tinged pastels, elegant draping and ethereal water goddess sheers.
