Marc Jacobs gets all serious
After so much pre- show twittering and build up of anticipation, how could we not fall in love with Marc Jacobs’s pretty, romantic yet demure AW10/11 collection. Watching a live stream in the Scout studio (sure to be a new trend to see the collections as they happen) we were swooned by Frederic Sanchez’s soundtrack “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and the sound of brown paper being torn down around 60+ models positioned on a square podium by Marc and the President of MJ, Robert Duffy. Individual models took to walking the floor in a series of simple, serene and elegant outfits with a nod to decades past. But this was no trip down memory lane, the girls looked modern and fresh, plucked form the streets of NY (some literally) and inspired but two of Marc’s collaborators on the Marc By Marc Jacobs line including Susanne Deeken who ended the parade. Messy hair with immaculate grooming is how Marc customers will want to look and be seen, he hit the right mark with a largely unknown group of models.
So the clothes; what can we expect to see in stores next season? Well apart from the cash registers ringing, yes it’s a very commercial collection and quite a departure from last winters harder edged and neon 80’s vibe. Practically void of any colour but evoking a sense of nostalgia through soft tonal and muted tones of greys, beiges and browns with a dusting of ivory, neutrals and a splash of lemon cello, anchored by black. A-line skirts and swing coats showed a penchant for the trapeze silhouette, high waisted flared pants gave the collection a 70’s vibe (one of Marc’s favourite periods) whilst cocoon shaped shaggy fur trimmed coats and chunky cable knit belted cardigans over soft empire line crushed velvet dresses had a softer, romantic edge.
Scout loved the ankle socks pared with pointy low-heeled Mary Janes and simple flat sandals or soft croc ankle boots teemed with over the elbow soft kid leather gloves. The transparent trench coats will have editors clamouring for samples whilst the rest of us will be on the waiting list no doubt for the fur trimmed metallic sequined coat.
It was one of Marc’s most grown up and tasteful collections to date and looking at him taking his bow in a slick tailored suit you couldn’t help feel a more mature hand at work.
