PICK ME UP: Contemporary Graphic Design Fair
Contemporary graphic design has just received the high-art accreditation it deserves at a brand new fair in London's Somerset House. The first of its kind in the UK, graphic artists emerged out of their studios and independent galleries on to the mainstage with a sale of affordable graphic art and illustration. Accompanying the exhibition was a lively schedule of events exploring the art of graphic design. Print Club London and Somerset House celebrated the instant gratification that graphic design can bring by inviting a selection of designers to print a poster live in their workshop, available for sale on the day in limited editions of 50 for £50. Rob Ryan, famed for his beautiful, folkish paper cut-outs temporarily relocated his East London studio for the duration of the fair giving visitors an inside view of how a creative studio works. Various art and design collectives including Concrete Hermit, Le Gun, Peepshow and Nobrow set up shop selling specially commissioned prints, drawings, graphics, t-shirts and fanzines whilst hands-on workshops were provided in the form of Print Club London’s printing workshops.
Somerset House is fast developing a reputation as an essential arts destination being host to London Fashion Week and now an ongoing series of design exhibitions including the very exciting, forthcoming Maison Martin Margiela 20!
