Selfridges ‘Sounds of The Mind’
The window dressers at London’s Selfridges department store have been ousted in favour of a set list of pop’s coolest! Ten acts have designed ten very distinctive window concepts, each with one of their own songs in mind. The XX, The Big Pink, Florence and the Machine, Paloma Faith, Dizzee Rascal, Marina and the Diamonds, Hot Chip The Drums, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Empire of the Sun were all invited to think in music, visualise in the third dimension.
Poetic fantasy permeates the concepts; Gainsbourg’s ‘Heaven Can Wait’ was translated into a sombre scene of abandoned objects romanticised in sad grey clouds and enrobing sheer chiffon. Paloma Faith’s window imbued a surreal Snow White vibe translating her track, ‘Do you want the truth or something beautiful?’ with a single glazed red apple the focus of a predominantly white composition, scattered with paper roses.
The electro-acts in the line up, personified their music with neon lights and motifs including The XX, Aussie’s Empire of the Sun and Florence. Finally, a childlike spirit pervaded Hot Chip and Dizzee Rascals showcase with bold and colourful paper pop-up book graphics. Marina and the Diamonds ‘I Am Not a Robot’ translated into a literal, and very cute salvaged-scrap metal figurine.
Until the end of June.
