The Strokes School of Cool

Scout has been out and about the past few days, enjoying the live retro sounds of two hot New York bands, who couldn't be more different from each other.

The Strokes played a sold out gig at the Hordern Pavillion on Thursday, enthusiastically playing hit after hit to a young stylish crowd. Opening with "New York City Cops" the set started with a speedball and stayed ramped up through "Hard to explain", "Reptillia" and Scout fav "Last night". First encore "Juicebox" was electric, with the hipsters sending the crowd into a frenzy. Lead singer Julian Casablancas kept his uber-cool glasses on the whole time, echoing John Cale from the Velvet Underground, which perfectly suited the similar sounds from their iconic debut album "Is this it".

Two nights later, at the Gaelic Club, School of Seven Bells played their lush guitar-fuzzed melodies to an eclectic crowd. Sounding directly like a mid-90's Creation label band, Benjamin Curtis along with twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, played hypnotic tracks from their two albums "Alpinisms" and the brilliant new disc "Disconnect from desire". At a time when many bands these days employ electronic production to ramp up their live performances, School of Seven Bells shoe-gazing music manages the impossible and sounds fresh.

Scout hearts live music!
