SCOUT at The Future Of_ 2017

Last week, SCOUT’s Creative Director Tony Bannister and Researcher Becky Lyon attended The Future Of_, a talk series taking guests on a journey to the ‘edges of tomorrow’ through the lens of mavericks and visionaries in their fields.

The Future Of_Wellness, very much a hot topic, was addressed by biological architect Rachel Wingfield. She hints towards a future where nature, technology and space converge to create therapeutic experiences for public benefit - such as collective bathhouses with medicinal fogs and soothing sleep pods.

Under the same theme, guests had the chance to experience Chromayoga - a pioneering approach to practicing yoga combining colour therapy, sound and scent. Blue light was applied to keep guests alert and refreshed for the afternoon session.

We saw evolutions of SCOUT’s Organic Life (SS18) and Super Nature Life (SS19) trends at The Future Of_Nature presented by Natsai Audrey Chieza. The designer, and recent TED Global speaker is re-programming bacteria to create beautiful, non-toxic, biopigments for textiles.  Angela Mathis presented a bold proposal where human organs are engineered from plant matter in response to donor shortages. Maria Apud Bell exhibited Mela a service company supplying a monthly chocolate box of bacterial cocktails designed for your specific health needs.

‘The future will be old fashioned’ declared Dr Kate Stone who is poetically embedding electronics and sound into tactile, interactive packaging, books, vinyl covers and posters in The Future Of_ Paper.  Meanwhile, Lucy Hardcastle is exploring new types of magical screen, beyond the flatscreen LED cellphone.

One of the highlights of the day was The Future Of_Humanity a colossal topic tackled by speculative architect Liam Young in his performative lecture and three-screen film ‘Hello City’. From the ‘perspective’ of a driverless car in a future urban environment, Liam took us through a powerful, yet cautionary tale through the future.

The Future Of_ was curated and produced by Propela - a representation agency for creative Superheroes working on the cutting edge of the arts and sciences.
